The United Nations has reported that the COVID-19 pandemic has decreased the world’s projected life expectancy. There are many factors which contribute to this such as delayed childhood vaccination programs, reduced access to health services, and declining self-reported mental health status. Among these factors is also ‘sedentary lifestyle’, the lack of exercise or movement (e.g. sitting for long periods of time). Sedentary lifestyle has impacted thousands of people around the world; however, it is a modifiable risk factor meaning it can be improved through physical activity.
A proposed strategy to increase physical activity is to improve the population’s physical literacy. Physical literacy is described as “the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities” (Whitehead, 2016). Therefore, as many institutions transition to a hybrid model of course delivery and government mandates regarding recreation use ease, a crucial opportunity for physical literacy intervention arises which is where we hand the torch over to you.
