We are inviting university/college & high school students to address some of the world’s greatest challenges during our weekend experience.

You will be offered a hands-on experiential learning opportunity, which will help you realize how you might contribute to some of the world’s greatest challenges.

Our hope is that the weekend will be life-changing, which will encourage you to explore how you might address important global issues, reflect on your experiences and challenge existing career assumptions.

Over the weekend, you will collaborate on addressing global challenges, and form teams, to follow our structured design sprint methodology.

This will help you define an important problem, develop a viable solution, and build an implementation plan.

This is a FREE EVENT. No Prior Experience is Needed.

To maximize student experience, BEST Startup Experience facilitates the students working in teams to deliver solutions that the team is passionate about. Mentorship is a key part of the Experiential Learning activities as it provides the most value possible to students as they gain invaluable advice from an experienced person, and build their professional networks.

Mentors reinforce the Design Sprint process, facilitate teamwork and guide students through the process. Mentors have a deep range of innovation and design experience, combined with a passion for sharing their knowledge and helping others that enhances the experience. We hope that mentors will find this experience valuable and meaningful and will enjoy interacting with aspiring entrepreneurs. If you are interested, please fill out the form using this LINK and provide your availabilities and areas of expertise.

Do we have to create our own challenges or will we be given some?

Overall the challenges we would like students to address are those aligned with the UN sustainability goals. Everyone is welcome to choose an aspect of these goals, and use this in a team over the weekend.

In addition, we will be bringing some specific challenges from our sponsors to participate in this event. You can bring your own challenge or choose one of the challenges that will be presented by one of the event partners (such as York University).

What are the prizes?

The main prizes (1st, 2nd and 3rd place) are judged on Innovativeness, Desirability, Feasibility, Viability, Impact on sustainability, presentation quality. In addition, each of the partner challenges will offer a prize-linked to the partner or the challenge.

Do I need to have a team to compete?

One of the greatest experiences is meeting others who are inspired to change the world, in fact, some of you may find your new best friend. So the basic answer is not, you do not have to come with a team, but if you come with a friend, you can choose to be on the same team.

How are teams chosen?

A couple of days before the event you will receive a link to provide some basic information about yourself and to identify which of the UN sustainability challenges you would like to work on. After the opening ceremonies you will be invited to join a group of participants who want to work on the same challenge, and you can choose your group from them.

Who is the event designed for?

The BEST Startup Experience is a great experiential learning opportunity that provides a safe space for you to explore new challenges, meet new people, learn new processes and explore your passions and strengths to make better-informed career decisions. The event is designed for undergraduate university and college students (from all disciplines) & grade 11 and 12 high school students.

(If you do not fall in these categories please  check with organizers how you might engage)
